Is my e-bike legal?

Compare your e-bike with the rules in your province or territory. Fill in what you know: each rule comes back as pass, fail or “law doesn’t say”, with the source we read.

Only provinces and territories we have published are listed.
The wattage on the motor or the spec sheet, e.g. 500.
The fastest the motor will push the bike, e.g. 32.
Does it have working pedals?
Does it have a throttle?
A twist grip or button that moves the bike without pedalling.
The bike alone, without the rider.

How the checker works

  • It compares what you enter with the rules for the province or territory you pick: motor power, assisted speed, bike weight, pedals, throttle and rider age.
  • Pass means your number is within the rule. Fail means it isn’t. Depends means you’re outside the general rule but the law has an exception that may apply to you: the result shows the exception and its source. Law doesn’t say means the law we read doesn’t state that rule, so we can’t check it. Blank fields are skipped.
  • Helmet, licence, registration and insurance rules are listed with your result.
  • Every rule shows its source and the date we last checked it. The checker can’t see your bike: it only knows the numbers you type in.
